You know how we sometimes think about doing things without planning because it’s the spontaneity that makes it epic? But somehow the timing doesn’t feel right, or there are still things to consider, or we just don’t have the energy to do things on impulse.
Whatever the reasons are, I discovered last weekend that the easiest way to make it happen is to just fucking do it.
“Put in the effort to do that day trip to the beach you keep putting off. Dip your feet in the water and dig your toes in the sand. Wet your face with salt water.”
— Holly Butcher
Mich and I had a very different plan for last Saturday: she was supposed to accompany me at the Land Transportation Office to renew my car registration. Very boring, I know. So when she said she wanted to go to the beach, I agreed to ditch our original plan.
In the six months that we’re dating, we’ve been to a number of places outside the city that I wouldn’t check out on my own because I’m not really the explorer type. But Mich likes long drives, and I don’t mind long drives when I have her in the passenger seat. Armed only with the Waze app, we punched in “Matabungkay, Batangas” in the search bar and, just like that, we were on our way.
Our outfits were anything but beach-ready and we didn’t bring any change of clothes. I folded my jeans as high as it would go — which sadly wasn’t that high — and Mich borrowed my extra flip-flops. We didn’t have a blanket to spread on the sand so I had my zip-up hoodie do the job instead.
We stayed for a couple hours, just enough to dip our toes in seawater and appreciate the quietness of the beach. There were no other people in the shore aside from the two of us.
Before leaving, I did a quick sketch of the place. It’s been a while since my last outdoor sketch; it felt good to play around with my pens again.
We left the beach at around 4:00 PM. It was my most spontaneous trip to date and first beach for this year. I told you I’m not much of an explorer, but this girl beside me takes me to places I wouldn’t think of going on my own. Maybe my 2018 will be full of spontaneous adventures on the road; now that would be a great year to look back on.
Well, have you been putting off a beach day trip, too?
